Today, I encounter a head problem case for 5416 family. The drive can’t be detected and firmware can’t be accessed. There are two possibilities: NVRAM corruption and head damage. So how judge the problem, please read the following words.
First, check whether NVRAM data is normal and whether PCB has been replaced. To know whether data structure of NVRAM is good or not, you can save NVRAM from a good drive and check it by Winhex. And the key to check whether PCB has been replaced is to identify serial number recorded in NVRAM (red character in the following picture) and compare it with the one recorded on lable.
In this case, data structure seems to be good and serial number is the same with that on label. So I suppose PCB hasn’t been replaced. Here, you should notice why I suppose it not judge it. This is because some third-party may also change serial number recorded in NVRAM.
After that, I proceed to check whether firmware can be accessed or not. Enter menu of Read FW, double click a module, and check content of that module.
Module can’t be accessed and also the client said no seek sound at power up, so I judge the possibility of head damage is higher.
