Translator Re-generation for Maxtor drive

Here is a very useful function in WD program: Translator Re-generate. It could get data back from P-list broken problem, and required in Hot-swap. And for Maxtor, there is similar function: P-list backup and import. It’s same as “Translator Re-generation” in WD program which play a very important role in Data Recovery.

This case will show you an example about how to regenerate the translator to retrieve data from a patient drive.

The last week we got a patient Maxtor 2B drive; this drive could be detected in BIOS, but couldn’t access the data area.

When we connect this drive to the Maxtor Doctor, we could load from HDD and do any operation to the modules:

But when we try to get into data area, it shows all 6666 problem:

This is a common problem for WD drive, to solve this problem in WD program, we just need to choose “Translator regenerate”, after it completed we could get the data retrieve.

But for Maxtor drive, we need to do those steps as follow:

  1. View P-list in defect management page:

  1. Check the backup file:

The PLIST file is which one we need.

  1. Empty the G/P list:

  1. Import the PLIST.BIN file:

  1. Wait for the import complete:

Then power off and on, try to access the data area again, now we can see the data yet:

The principle of P-list import is depend on the #51 module (manufactory defect record) to rebuild #24, #55, #120 modules. So, even the three modules were broken, as long as the #51 module is good. We could recover data rely on this module. But if the #51 module was broken, we have no idea.
