Typical data recovery case for 7200.9 and 7200.10

In Barracuda 7200.9 and 7200.10 HDD, there is a typical malfunction, in which the HDD will not be detected and data area is not accessed. Also, you will get the following message in cmd mode:

Interface task reset

1024k x 16 SDRAM

TONKA40 – 1_Disk M-31 11-15-05 15:49

Buzz – Head Mask FFFF – Switch to full int.

Spin Ready

(P)PATA Reset

Failed sys sect. write

Unable To Load Overlay 01|000A

The malfunction is caused by corrupted G-List or SMART. When G-List or SMART is corrupted, the HDD can’t reallocate bad sectors. Therefore, the HDD will consider its self in read-only state and ATA commands can’t be executed again. This is the reason why the HDD reports “Failed sys sect. write” and “Unable To Load Overlay 01|000A” to terminal log.

The solution for such malfunction is to erase G-List or initialize SMART by respective command “i4,1,22″ and “N1″. The following is the procedure:

Erase G-List:

Step 1. In cmd mode, switch power off and on. Press keyboard [Ctrl] + [Z] to enter level T (T>) before the first message “Failed sys sect. write” output to log.

Step 2. Load Cert by command [Crtl] + [R].

Step 3. Input command “i4,1,22″ to erase G-List.

Initialize SMART:

Step 1. In cmd mode, switch power off and on. Press keyboard [Ctrl] + [Z] to enter level T (T>) before the first message “Failed sys sect. write” output to log.

Step 2. Enter level 1 by command “/1″ (T>/1).

Step3. In level 1, input command “N1″ (1>N1) to initialize SMART.

After erasing G-List or initializing SMART, the HDD will get detected and data area can be accessed. However, there is a situation when the command to erase G-List or initialize SMART will be stuck. That is cause by bad physical sectors located in G-List or SMART cylinder. No solution for that case.
